In the prologue of Plato's Sophist, two views about the sophist are presented: 1) the benevolent one of Socrates, who is willing to consider the possibility that the sophist, the statesman, and the philosopher all belong to the same kind; 2) the hostile and critical one of the Stranger from Elea. In the course of the dialogue, it can be seen that Socrates' initial view proves to be the more correct and to prevail over that of the Stranger from Elea.

No prólogo do Sofista de Platão, confrontam-se dois pontos de vista sobre a figura do sofista: 1) o de Sócrates, benevolente, disposto a considerar a possibilidade de que o sofista, o político e o filósofo constituam um único gênero; 2) do Estrangeiro de Eléia, hostil à figura em questão, e freqüentemente depreciativo dela. No desenvolvimento do diálogo, verifica-se que o ponto de vista inicial de Sócrates revela-se o mais verdadeiro e impõe-se à revelia do Estrangeiro de Eléia.
