From the maritime experience of Africans in Africa, this paper analyzesthe changes that occurred in the Portuguese legislation about the mobilityand the registration of captive sailors and discusses the interpretationsof these themes by the current historiography. It ends with an analysisof the prospects of freedom for the enslaved sailors in transit within thePortuguese colonies between the second half of the eighteenth centuryand the first decades of the nineteenth century.

A partir da experiência marítima de africanos na África, analiso astransformações ocorridas em função da legislação portuguesa sobre amobilidade e o registro dos marinheiros cativos e as leituras disso nahistoriografia, culminando com uma análise das perspectivas de liberdadede marinheiros escravos em trânsito pelos domínios portugueses entre asegunda metade do XVIII e as primeiras décadas do século XIX.
