PERCEPTIONS OF JIU-JITSU WOMEN: BETWEEN BARRIERS AND ADVANCES

The objective of the study was to analyze the challenges that women face in the practice of Brazilian jiu-jitsu in the perception of female black belts in the City of Rio de Janeiro. 16 black belt jiu-jitsu women, between 23 and 47 years old, with more than seven years of experience in the sport were interviewed. The results showed three categories: self-defense, inferiority in competitions and gender inequality. Even though in the current context female participation has increased, challenges and prejudices are still perceived for the practice of female jiu-jitsu.

O objetivo do estudo foi analisar os desafios que mulheres enfrentam na prática do jiu-jitsu brasileiro na percepção de faixas preta do sexo feminino na Cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Foram entrevistadas 16 mulheres, faixa preta de jiu-jitsu, entre 23 e 47 anos, com mais de sete anos de experiência na modalidade. Os resultados evidenciaram três categorias: defesa pessoal, inferioridade nas competições e desigualdade de gênero. Ainda que no contexto atual a participação feminina tenha aumentado, ainda são percebidos desafios e preconceitos para a prática do jiu-jitsu pelo sexo feminino.
