Introduction: In Portugal, scientific production in nursing is embedded within a trajectory shaped by historical, educational, and political transformations, framed by a research context of significant growth. Aim: This study aims to map the scientific production in nursing by Portuguese affiliated co-authors. Methods: Scientometric approach with a quantitative and descriptive analysis of 2,617 scientific records (1968-2022) retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Results: The study identified three evolutionary periods in Portuguese nursing science: Genesis (1968–2009), Early Development (2010–2018), and Consolidated Production (≥2019). Of the total records, 67.9% were articles, with English as the predominant language (90.64%), and an average of three authors per article (18.4%). Discussion: The development of nursing science in Portugal can be categorised into three chronological stages, influenced by changes in the organisation, teaching curricula, and the structuring of knowledge production processes. There has been a significant international projection of nursing research, particularly through co-authorship with Spain and Brazil. On the thematic level, a strong focus on research and scientific production has emerged in relation to professional practice, the nursing profession, and nursing education. Conclusions: The study demonstrates that nursing research in Portugal is in consolidation. Factors such as the development of academic curricula, university degrees and the integration into research centres and networks have contributed to this progress. Research patterns are also recognised, identifying collaborations and themes addressed, thereby supporting researchers and policymakers in promoting initiatives for the advancement and training in nursing.
Introdução: Em Portugal, a produção científica em enfermagem insere-se num percurso marcado por transformações históricas, educativas e políticas, num quadro investigativo de forte crescimento. Objetivo: Este estudo tem como objetivo mapear a produção científica em enfermagem, produzida por coautores afiliados a instituições portuguesas. Métodos: Análise cienciométrica de abordagem quantitativa e descritiva de 2.617 registos científicos (1968-2022) recuperados da Web of Science Core Collection. Resultados: O estudo identificou três períodos evolutivos na produção científica em enfermagem em Portugal: Génese (1968–2009), Desenvolvimento Inicial (2010–2018) e Produção Consolidada (≥2019). Do total de registos, 67,9% eram artigos, sendo que o inglês foi a língua predominante (90,64%), apresentando média de três autores por artigo (18,4%). Discussão: O desenvolvimento da ciência da enfermagem em Portugal decorre em três fases cronológicas influenciadas por mudanças organizacionais, nos curricula de ensino e na estruturação dos processos de produção de conhecimento. Verifica-se uma significativa projeção internacional da investigação em enfermagem, através da coautoria com Espanha e Brasil. A nível temático, destaque para o enfoque na investigação e na produção científica relacionada com a prática, a profissão e a educação em enfermagem. Conclusões: O estudo demonstra que a investigação em enfermagem em Portugal está numa fase de consolidação. Fatores como a criação de oferta académica, graus universitários e a integração em centros e redes de investigação contribuíram para esse progresso. Reconhecem-se, ainda, padrões investigativos, identificando colaborações e temas abordados, apoiando investigadores e decisores na promoção de iniciativas de promoção e formação em enfermagem.
