Taking as points of reference the opposing theories of «economic imperialism» and «prestige imperialism», this article weighs up the various factors which contributed to the consolidation of Portuguese colonial plans centred in Africa, after the breakdown of the Luso-Brazilian system. This study emphasizes in particular the political motivations involved, which were in part geo-strategic, and in part tied in with the construction of a national identity, the image which the country had of itself.

Tomando como pontos de referência as teses, de sentido oposto, do «imperialismo económico» e do «imperialismo de prestígio», o artigo sopesa os diversos factores que contribuíram para a afirmação do projecto colonial português centrado em África após a desagregação do sistema luso-brasileiro. Na análise dá-se um relevo particular às motivações políticas, em parte, de ordem geo- estratégica, por outro lado, ligadas à construção da identidade nacional, à imagem que o país formava de si próprio.
