Some of the main features of the transformation of industrial relations in three sectors of the industrial belts of Lisbon and Setúbal are analysed. These sectors are heterogeneous: at times they represent technological and organizational modernization, at other times activities in crisis and regeneration. In all cases, however, they are relevant «laboratories» of new management and labour strategies, and of instances of trade union intervention. They are also important areas of activity for the national economy, for employers and trade unionism, and for the redefinition of the roles of the state. Technical and organizational models are created and recreated in the interaction of social entities, as they confront various political and cultural traditions. Labour relations come into this system, emphasizing the extent of the relations of social forces and the paths that should be favoured in comparative international studies of labour relations.

Apresenta-se aqui uma análise de alguns aspectos principais das transformações das relações de trabalho em três sectores das cinturas industriais de Lisboa e Setúbal. Estes sectores são heterogéneos: ora representam actividades com modernização tecnológica e organizacional, ora actividades em crise e refluxo, mas em todos os casos são «laboratórios» relevantes das novas estratégias de gestão de mão-de-obra e de experiências de intervenção sindical. Além disso, são ramos de actividade importantes para a economia nacional, para o patronato e o sindicalismo e para a redefinição dos papéis do Estado. Na interacção dos actores sociais, os modelos técnico-organizacionais são criados e recriados, ao defrontarem-se com várias tradições políticas e culturais. As relações laborais inserem-se nesse sistema, relevando mais claramente as dimensões das relações das forças sociais e das trajectórias que devem ser privilegiadas nos estudos comparativos internacionais das relações de trabalho.
