The article focuses on the final stage of the dismemberment of the Luso-Brazilian empire and discusses the treaty of recognition of Brazil by Portugal, analysing the political negotiations and manoeuvres which led up to it and which immediately followed it, up until the death of king John VI, in March 1826. The text does not view this process as a natural result of Brazil's proclamation of independence, which was accepted without alarm, but as a final attempt by the Lisbon court to re-establish the empire, both politically and economically, through a dynastic union. The article gives a historical account of the various paths taken to achieve that objective: open or secret contacts in Brazil, the threat of a military expedition, diplomatic negotiations in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro. To conclude, the author suggests that this policy, which utterly failed, had a dual negative effect by compromising the chances of obtaining a privileged trading system with Brazil and helping to open the door, in Portugal, to the conflicts which would culminate in the civil war a few years later.

Tendo por objectivo a fase final da desagregação do império luso-brasileiro, o artigo move-se em torno do tratado de reconhecimento do Brasil por Portugal, de 29 de Agosto de 1825, analisando as negociações e manobras políticas que a ele conduziram e as que lhe sucederam de imediato, até à morte de D. João VI, em Março de 1825. No texto esse processo é visto, não como a sequência natural da proclamação da independência do Brasil, aceite sem sobressaltos, mas sim como a última tentativa da corte de Lisboa para refazer o império, tanto do ponto de vista político como do económico, através da união dinástica. O artigo historia as diversas vias formadas para atingir esse objectivo: diligências abertas ou secretas no Brasil, ameaça de expedição militar, negociações diplomáticas em Londres, em Lisboa e no Rio de Janeiro. A concluir, sugere-se que esta política, inteiramente falhada, teve um duplo efeito negativo, comprometendo as hipóteses de obter um regime mercantil privilegiado com o Brasil e contribuindo para abrir a porta, em Portugal, aos conflitos que vão culminar na guerra civil, poucos anos mais tarde.
