Benefits of oral care for newborns admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit: protocol of a scoping review

Introduction: In Neonatal Intensive Care Units, newborns, especially premature and mechanically ventilated, are often exposed to negative oral experiences and colonization of the mouth and oropharynx by microorganisms that make them susceptible to healthcare-associated infections. Mouth care has positive results in minimizing this phenomenon. Objective: To map, in the scientific literature, the benefits of oral care for newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Method and Materials: This protocol follows the guidelines of The Joanna Briggs Institute, PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extended for Scoping Reviews) model and PAGER framework. The sample will consist of all studies and documents that report the benefits of oral care to newborns hospitalized in Neonatal Intensive Care Units, with no exclusion criteria. Quantitative, qualitative or mixed studies, as well as grey literature, in Portuguese or English, published in the last 10 years and relevant to the theme, should be included. The documents will be examined by two reviewers and, if there is a tie, by the third reviewer. Results: The data will be organized in two extraction tables, PRISMA and PAGER, and mapped in a descriptive and logical way, based on the defined revision question. Conclusions: This protocol aims to systematize the existing knowledge and identify gaps in research related to oral care and its benefits for the neonatal population, hospitalized in Intensive Care Units, with the objective of actively contributing to the quality of nursing care for the neonatal population.

Introdução: Nas Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatais, os recém-nascidos, especialmente prematuros e ventilados mecanicamente, estão frequentemente expostos a experiências orais negativas e à colonização da boca e da orofaringe por micro-organismos que os tornam suscetíveis a infeções associadas aos cuidados de saúde. Os cuidados à boca têm resultados positivos na minimização deste fenómeno. Objetivo: Mapear, na literatura científica, os benefícios dos cuidados à boca ao recém-nascido internado na Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatais. Materiais e Método: Este protocolo segue as orientações do The Joanna Briggs Instituite, modelo PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extended for Scoping Reviews) e framework PAGER. A amostra será constituída por todos os estudos e documentos que reportem os benefícios dos cuidados à boca a recém-nascidos, internados nas Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatais, não havendo critérios de exclusão. Deverão ser incluídos estudos quantitativos, qualitativos ou mistos, assim como literatura cinzenta, em português ou inglês, publicados nos últimos 10 anos e relevantes para a temática. Os documentos serão examinados por dois revisores e, caso haja empate, pelo terceiro revisor. Resultados: Os dados serão organizados em duas tabelas de extração, PRISMA e PAGER, e mapeados de forma descritiva e lógica, tendo por base as questões de revisão definidas. Conclusões: Este protocolo prevê sistematizar o conhecimento existente e identificar lacunas na investigação relacionada com os cuidados à boca e os seus benefícios para a população neonatal, internada nas Unidades de Cuidados intensivos, com o objetivo de contribuir ativamente para a qualidade dos cuidados de enfermagem à população neonatal.
