Rule of qualified goal and its effects on possession of ball and goals marked in Brazil footbal cup

The objective of this study was to verify the effects of the away goal rule on the possession of the ball and goals scored in the final stages of the Brazilian Football Cup. We analyzed 48 official matches of the Brazilian Cup in 2016 and 2017, when the away goal rule was used, and 2018 and 2019, when the respective rule was no longer used. The data collected from each match were the score of the game and the time of ball possession, separated in the first and second half referring to the quarterfinals and semifinals stages. In order to verify differences in ball possession in the outgoing games of the analyzed stages with and without qualified goal of the home and away teams, one-way analysis of variance was performed separately for each team. Similar analyzes were carried out for the goals scored in the first leg games, as well as in the possession of the ball and goals scored in the second leg games. The results showed superiority in the average ball possession in the first half of the quarter-final and semifinal matches of the home teams in the years without the away goal rule (2018-2019). In addition, it was verified superiority of goals scored by the home teams in the quarterfinals and semifinals with the away goal rule (2016-2017), in the 2nd half of the second leg games. It is concluded that the qualified goal rule affected the behavior of the home and away teams, at the 2016-2019 Brazilian Football Cup.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar os efeitos da regra do gol qualificado na posse de bola e gols marcados nas fases finais da Copa do Brasil de Futebol. Foram analisados 48 jogos oficiais da Copa do Brasil dos anos de 2016 e 2017, quando foi utilizada a regra do gol qualificado, e 2018 e 2019, período em que não foi mais utilizada a respectiva regra. As variáveis coletadas em cada partida foram o placar do jogo e o tempo de posse de bola, separados em primeiro e segundo tempos referentes as fases de quartas de finais e semifinais. Para verificar possíveis diferenças na posse de bola nos jogos de ida das fases analisadas, com e sem gol qualificado das equipes mandantes e visitantes, foram realizadas análises de variância one-way, separadamente para cada tempo. Análises similares foram realizadas para os gols marcados nos jogos de ida, como também na posse de bola e gols marcados nos jogos de volta. Os resultados mostraram superioridade no tempo de posse de bola no 1º tempo dos jogos de ida das quartas e semifinais das equipes mandantes nos anos sem a regra do gol qualificado (2018-2019). Além disso, foi verificada superioridade de gols marcados pelas equipes mandantes nos jogos das quartas e semifinais com a regra do gol qualificado (2016-2017), no 2º tempo dos jogos de volta. Conclui-se que a regra do gol qualificado afetou o comportamento das equipes mandantes e visitantes, nas Copas do Brasil de 2016-2019.
