Economic interiorization in Rio de Janeiro: an analysis from the dynamics of the Metropolitan region

The objective of the research was to analyze the process of economic expansion of the Metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro state, in last the two decades. The formal job was used as proxy to describe the economic growth. To analyze the evolution of employment in the economic activities of this region, the differential-structural method was used. The region, according to the results, showed an economic behavior relatively less dynamic than the other regions, what was reflected in the fall of its participation in the total employment of the state. The low supply of factors to promote competitiveness, the fiscal war, and the expansion of the mineral extraction industry to the interior of the state are, probably, causes of this process.

O objetivo da pesquisa foi analisar a dinâmica econômica da região Metropolitana do estado do Rio de Janeiro, nas últimas duas décadas, tomando-se, como proxy, o emprego formal. Com o uso do modelo estrutural diferencial, fez-se uma análise da evolução do pessoal ocupado nas diversas atividades econômicas dessa região. A região, segundo os resultados, exibiu comportamento econômico relativamente menos dinâmico do que as demais regiões, o que se refletiu na queda de sua participação no emprego total do estado. A precária oferta de fatores propícios à competitividade, a guerra fiscal e a expansão da indústria extrativa mineral no interior do estado são, provavelmente, causas desse processo.
