The history of a people refers us to its identity and its heritage is built on its cultural roots. This culture is represented/symbolised, equally, by history, by traditions, as well as by art and literature. In the Northeast Transmontano, the most characteristic festivities are the solstitial festivities, held in the twelve days from Advent to the Epiphany, among them, the Carnival or Entrudo, a cultural and ancestral tradition, where the masks and the carriers - Caretos -, are the protagonists. On these days, the Caretos become superior beings, diabolical and magical figures, who are allowed to do all kinds of nonsense, pranks and jokes. The Caretos are figures incarnated by the boys and men of the villages who, behind the masks, the characteristic fringed and coloured costumes and with the noisy rattles that they wear around their waists, assume the role of true enigmatic and demonic beings. It is these men and boys who, throughout time, guarantee the succession of these cultural manifestos of a people, an epoch, a region.

A história de um povo remete-nos para a sua identidade e o seu património é construído a partir das suas raízes culturais. Esta cultura é representada/simbolizada, igualmente, pela história, pelas tradições, bem como pela arte e pela literatura. No Nordeste Transmontano, as festividades mais características são as festas solsticiais, realizadas nos doze dias que vão do Advento à Epifania, entre elas, o Carnaval ou Entrudo, uma tradição cultural e ancestral, onde as máscaras e os portadores – Caretos -, são os protagonistas. Os Caretos, nestes dias, tornam-se seres superiores, figuras diabólicas e mágicas, a quem é permitido fazer todo o tipo de disparates, tropelias e brincadeiras. Os Caretos são figuras incarnadas pelos rapazes e homens das aldeias que, por detrás das máscaras, dos característicos fatos franjados e coloridos e com os barulhentos chocalhos que trazem à cintura, assumem o papel de verdadeiros entes enigmáticos e demoníacos. São estes homens e rapazes que, ao longo dos tempos, garantem a sucessão destes manifestos de cultura de um povo, de uma época, de uma região.
