This text analyzes the process of institution of Teachers’ Day in Brazil, which is celebrated in October 15th since 1933. The different meanings of this date are identified from the perspective that it was an opportunity to give teachers’ issues public visibility and to express different thoughts on teachers’ work. 

Este artigo analisa o processo de institucionalização do Dia do Professor no Brasil, celebrado em 15 de outubro desde 1933, identificando os diferentes significados assumidos pela data que se afirmou como uma forma de dar visibilidade ao magistério e de expressar diferentes concepções acerca da docência.
