The text begins with a definition of the term “riot” and its uses in the 18th century. And then summarizes the reasons that led merchant marine sailors, including enslaved ones, to riot on the high seas. Finally, the case of the mutiny that occurred in the middle of the Atlantic aboard the ship N. S. da Piedade and São Boaventura and its forced entry in Rio de Janeiro in 1783 is described, to dialogue with the definition of movements of this type and with the notion of indiscipline in maritime historiography.

O texto traz uma definição inicial do termo “motim” e seus usos correntes no século XVIII para, em seguida, apresentar sumariamente os motivos que levavam marinheiros mercantes, incluindo os escravizados, a se amotinarem em alto mar. Por fim, é descrito o caso do motim ocorrido em pleno Atlântico a bordo do navio N. S. da Piedade e São Boaventura e sua arribada forçada no Rio de Janeiro em 1783, para dialogar com a definição de movimentos desse tipo e com a noção de indisciplina na historiografia marítima.
