The relations between cinema and literature in the 21st century are multifaceted and though based on adaptation, go well beyond this phenomenon of transposition that historically prevails in the history of cinema. For example, this period saw the consolidation of two genres, usually considered minor, which in the world context became the most popular among film viewers: science fiction and fantasy.But if this global trend is notorious, there are regional specificities that we cannot overlook, with markedly different traditions in the US and Europe – in one case based on storytelling, in the other based on the auteur. On the other hand, it appears that it was not yet at this time that the great classics of literature found their definitive versions. As for the essay, a literary genre usually seen as marginal, it has gained, through cinema, a very significant cultural relevance. In conclusion, between the overwhelming blockbuster and the intimate film, an attempt was made here to make a synopsis of these two decades of cinema and literature, taking the opportunity to map the main theories and issues that occupied scholars at this time.
As relações entre cinema e literatura nas duas décadas que o século XXI já leva são multifacetadas e, assentando na adaptação, vão bem para lá deste fenómeno de transposição que historicamente prevalece na história do cinema. Este período assistiu à consolidação de dois géneros, usualmente tidos como menores, que no contexto mundial se tornaram os mais populares entre os espectadores da sétima arte: a ficção científica e a fantasia.Mas se esta tendência global é notória, existem especificidades regionais que não podemos descurar, com tradições vincadamente diferentes nos EUA e na Europa – num caso assente no storytelling, no outro assente no auteur. Por outro lado, verifica-se que ainda não foi neste tempo que os grandes clássicos da literatura conheceram as suas versões definitivas. Já quanto ao ensaio, um género literário usualmente tido como marginal, tem vindo a ganhar, através do cinema, uma relevância cultural muito significativa.Concluindo, entre o blockbuster avassalador e a película intimista, procurou-se efetuar aqui uma sinopse destas duas décadas de cinema e literatura, aproveitando para mapear as principais teorias e problemáticas que ocuparam os estudiosos neste tempo.
