The contemporary societies so-called developed, where Portugal fits, are undergoing a processof rapid acceleration, partly due globalization phenomenon, with its focus on progress, that hasopened the world to an infinity of possibility and interpretations. The social identity is not unrevealedto these phenomena. It is located in time and space. Absolve all transformations and takes upthe tones of the time that stands, assuming the new concepts, practices, subjectivities, standards,languages, meanings, etc.The text presented here, we seek unravel the contemporary portuguese identity, situating it inEurope, which share common principles and values. For this, we used data from the last edition ofthe European Values Survey, namely data the 2008 for Portugal, from which was possible to inquireabout how the portuguese position themselves in relation to racial and ethnics differences presentin Portugal. Specifically we tried to understand if the portuguese are aware of cultural diversity andsomehow this interfere in the selfhood that define the Portuguese people.The data analysis allowed to hold two plausible readings: if on hand we realize that a significantpart of the portuguese not showing bothered with the presence of other people and culture in thecountry, considering until they should enjoy equal opportunities, have the possibility to nationalizeand to integrate social and professionally, on other hand the portuguese deposited also in theimmigrants the reason for same of the problems which the portuguese society has been confronted,more specifficaly, increased crime, lack of same jobs and the burden of social security.

As sociedades contemporâneas ditas desenvolvidas, aonde se inscreve Portugal, estão a passar por um processo de grande aceleração, em parte devido ao fenómeno da globalização, com a sua aposta no progresso, que veio abrir o mundo a uma infinidade de possibilidades e interpretações. A identidade social não é alheia a estes fenómenos. Ela situa-se no tempo e no espaço. Absorve todas as transformações e reveste-se dos tons do tempo em que se posiciona, assumindo os novos conceitos, práticas, subjetividades, padrões, linguagens, significados, etc. No texto que aqui se apresenta, procura-se desvendar a identidade portuguesa contemporânea, situando-a na europa, com quem partilha princípios e valores comuns. Para isso, recorreu-se aos dados da última edição do European Values Survey, nomeadamente aos dados de 2008 para Portugal, a partir dos quais foi possível indagar sobre a forma como os portugueses se posicionam em relação às diferenças raciais e étnicas presentes em Portugal. De um modo mais específico, tentámos compreender se os portugueses estão sensibilizados para a diversidade cultural e se, de alguma forma, esta interfere nos padrões identitários que definem o povo português. A análise dos dados permitiu realizar duas leituras plausíveis: se por um lado, percebemos que uma parte significativa dos portugueses não se mostra incomodada com a presença de outros povos e culturas no seu país, considerando até que estes devem usufruir de igualdade de oportunidades, terem a possibilidade de se nacionalizarem e de se integrarem social e profissionalmente; por outro lado, os portugueses depositam também nos imigrantes a razão de ser de alguns dos problemas com que a sociedade portuguesa se tem confrontado, mais propriamente, o aumento da criminalidade, a falta de alguns postos de trabalho e a sobrecarga da Segurança Social.
