Aside from being a tireless traveller, Miguel Torga was a citizen who was deeply concerned about his homeland, and about the defining lines of national identity as they were inscribed in the world and, above all, within the borders of Europe. Throughout this essay, we will analyse the different “faces” of Europe, as portrayed by the author in the travel accounts which are registered in his Diário. Firstly, we will take as reference two European countries that he visited and which currently have very distinct positions within the European Community: Greece and Germany. Afterwards, we will focus on the writer’s description of how Portugal joined the European Economic Community and, subsequently, we will approach the idea of the fallibility of History in the abovementioned work.
Miguel Torga, para além de viajante incansável, foi um cidadão profundamente preocupado com a sua pátria, com as linhas definidoras da identidade nacional, inscritas no mundo e sobretudo nas fronteiras da Europa. Analisaremos, no presente artigo, nos registos das viagens de Torga, presentes no Diário, os diversos «rostos da Europa» por ele configurados. Primeiramente, tomaremos como pontos de referência dois dos países europeus visitados, e atualmente em situações muito díspares no seio da Comunidade Europeia: a Grécia e a Alemanha. De seguida, focaremos o modo como o escritor abordou a entrada de Portugal para a Comunidade Económica Europeia e a ideia da falibilidade da História.
