Tendo em conta o poder que os média, enquanto veículos noticiosos de uma sociedade, têm em moldar o entendimento e interpretações que o público faz dos acontecimentos que o rodeiam, tornou-se pertinente compreender de que forma foi levada a cabo a cobertura jornalística do casamento real do Príncipe William com Kate Middleton na imprensa britânica, entre os dias 16 de novembro de 2010 (o anúncio do noivado) e 10 de maio de 2011 (uma semana após o casamento real). Assim, através de uma análise discursiva comparativa de três jornais britânicos - The Daily Mail, The Guardian e The Sun -, pretende-se averiguar qual a representação que os média fizeram deste acontecimento mediático, cujo alcance é cada vez mais de natureza global e transcultural. Neste sentido, e tendo por base os contributos da matriz interdisciplinar dos estudos culturais, partiremos da perspetiva neo durkheimiana perfilhada por Daniel Dayan e Elihu Katz (Media Events, 1994) para a problematizarmos à luz da transterritorialidade das culturas mediáticas contemporâneas.
ABSTRACT: Bearing in mind the power and influence that the mass media, as a news vehicle, have in shaping people’s understanding and interpretations regarding social events, it is important to understand how the journalistic coverage of the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton was made (from the 16th of November 2010 – the announcement of the royal wedding – until the 10th of may 2011 – one week after the royal wedding). Therefore, through a comparative discourse analysis of three British newspapers – The Daily Mail, The Guardian and The Sun – we seek to analyse the representation of this media event, which has had a global and transcultural reach. Thus and drawing on the interdisciplinarity of Cultural Studies, we will follow Daniel Dayan and Elihu Katz’s neo durkheimian perspective (Media Events, 1994) to problematize it in the light of the translocal dimension of contemporary media cultures.
