O HTLV é a sigla para Vírus linfotrópico de células T humanas. Dos quatro tipos já identificados, o tipo 1 (HTLV-1) é o que apresenta maior distribuição mundial, sendo conhecido pela sua associação com doenças graves como a leucemia/linfoma de células T do adulto (ATL) e desordens neurológicas (mielopatia associada ao HTLV/ paraparesia espástica tropical – HAM/TSP). Estima-se que, aproximadamente, 5 a 10 milhões de pessoas estejam infectadas pelo HTLV-1 no mundo. O Brasil tem aproximadamente 800.000 indivíduos infectados pelo HTLV-1 de um total de, aproximadamente, 209 milhões de habitantes. No entanto, a infecção pelo HTLV ainda permanece desconhecida e negligenciada por grande parte da população. Nossa expectativa com esta edição é fornecer dados e informações importantes e atualizadas para a disseminação do conhecimento sobre o HTLV.
HTLV stands for Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus. Of the four types already identified, type 1 (HTLV-1) is the most widely distributed worldwide, being known for its association with serious diseases such as adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and neurological disorders (myelopathy associated with HTLV/ tropical spastic paraparesis – HAM/TSP). It is estimated that approximately 5 to 10 million people are infected with HTLV-1 worldwide. Brazil has approximately 800,000 HTLV-1 infected individuals out of a total of approximately 209 million inhabitants. However, HTLV infection remains unknown and neglected by a large part of the population. Our expectation with this edition is to provide important and up-to-date data and information for the dissemination of knowledge about HTLV.
