À l’instar des écrivains arabophones qui ont connu l’exil, Tayeb Salih aborde dans son roman la question de la réappropriation de l’espace originel. De son expérience personnelle, il utilise la traversée comme matériau pour façonner un art fondé sur l’expression de l’identité mémorielle. La possession de la géographie est un enjeu central ; l’installation définitive des personnages dans leur terre natale annonçant la fin de leurs pérégrinations n’est pas toujours à considérer comme valorisée. L’espace premier jadis nid protecteur devient leur lieu d’exil.
