Description

The ESTA Portugal Branch is delighted to be hosting the 52nd International ESTA Conference from March 23rd to 27th 2024, at the Superior School of Music and Performing Arts, Porto, Portugal. Porto is a coastal city in northwest Portugal known for its stately bridges and port wine production. It is the second largest city in the country, where history meets modernity with a good infrastructure and a diverse cultural life that portrays the dynamism of the city. It was the city of the highly acclaimed early 20th century cellist Guilhermina Suggia, and has many music schools covering all levels and idioms. The centennial Conservatory created, in 1947, the city’s Sinfonica do Porto housed at the internationally renowned Casa da Musica foundation. The conference theme is “Connecting People”. Since time immemorial, interpersonal and community relationships have been strengthened through music. It is a way of bringing people together. It stimulates individual and collective creativity. It establishes ways of working and cultural standards. Music is an echo of the vital and gregarious essence of what it is to be human. Naturally, the teaching of stringed instruments contains this energy of growth based on the relationship with others. In the times we live in, it is essential not to lose sight of the importance that our teaching has in promoting interpersonal relationships and human development. More than the historical representation of diverse cultures, we are a community where it is important to promote artistic expression through learning and practicing a musical instrument. A meeting place where each voice has its space. In the year that ESTA Portugal celebrates its 10th anniversary, with educational and cultural communities. The various practices, teaching strategies, contents, interpersonal and social relationships, must be the object of sharing and questioning. This reflection will help to fill our profession with meaning at a defining moment for humanity in which we face challenges on a planetary scale. In “Connecting People” we intend to strengthen connections and tread paths in music teaching that bring us closer to a better world. Therefore, we would like to appeal to the teachers, students and researchers of the ESTA family and provide the best conditions possible to join forces with us to create, develop and disseminate our collective knowledge and experience about string teaching. This 5 days event will host lectures, masterclasses, paper presentations, performances, workshops, Flash presentations and Round table discussions from around Europe. There will be a balance of practical and theoretical presentations spread across the duration of the conference. This conference is co-organised by ESTA Portugal Branch and Superior School of Music and Performing Arts - Polytechnic Institute of Porto in partnership with Institute of Ethnomusicology - Center for Studies in Music and Dance.
