: This paper aims to identify the trends in Brazil for the expansion of higher education institutions, undergraduate courses and enrollments between 1980 and 2018. The data were collected on the INEP website, systematized and analyzed. It was possible to verify the increase in the number of higher education institutions in Brazil, as well as the predominance of enrollments in the private sector, which points to the commodification of education. Another interesting data refers to the growth of the distance learning modality, both in terms of the number of courses and enrollments.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo geral identificar as tendências no Brasil de expansão das instituições de ensino superior, dos cursos de graduação e das matrículas entre os anos de 1980 e 2018. Os dados foram coletados no site do INEP, sistematizados em tabelas e analisados. Foi possível verificar o aumento do número de instituições de ensino superior no Brasil e o processo de privatização das mesmas, bem como o predomínio de matrículas no setor privado. Outro dado interessante refere-se ao crescimento da modalidade do ensino à distância, tanto em termos do número de cursos quanto de matrículas.
