Nos últimos anos, tem-se assistido, numa escola do Funchal, a um aumento preocupante do insucesso escolar na disciplina de Inglês. Cada vez mais se constata a existência de alunos desmotivados e que apresentam baixos rendimentos escolares. A procura de razões para o insucesso escolar tem sido, desde há muitos anos, uma preocupação partilhada não só por professores, mas também por pais e por investigadores. Os estudos realizados sobre esta temática atribuem a responsabilidade pelo (in)sucesso escolar a uma pluralidade de fatores, intrínsecos e extrínsecos aos alunos, o que leva a compreender que não há uma forma única de encarar este fenómeno. Com este projeto de intervenção, pretende-se compreender os fatores que conduzem ao (in)sucesso na disciplina de Inglês numa escola do Funchal, tendo como linha de partida o ponto de vista dos alunos e dos docentes que lecionam esta disciplina, e encontrar estratégias que conduzam a uma melhoria do sucesso naquela disciplina. Para atingir os objetivos pretendidos, foram levados a cabo focus groups com alunos e professores daquela escola, tendo no total, participado 14 alunos e 3 professoras que lecionam a disciplina de Inglês. Chegou-se à conclusão que o sucesso escolar depende de uma multiplicidade de fatores, que vão desde o comportamento, empenho e estudo por parte dos alunos, às estratégias utilizadas pelos professores na lecionação da disciplina. Foi salientado, também, o papel importante dos encarregados de educação, nomeadamente no que se refere à sua participação na vida escolar dos seus educandos.
Over the last years, there has been, in a school in Funchal, a worrying increase of school failure in the English subject. There are more and more unmotivated students, showing low school results. Looking for reasons for school failure has been, for many years, a concern shared not only by teachers but also by parents and researchers. Studies on this topic attribute responsibility for school success / failure to a plurality of factors, intrinsic and extrinsic to the students, which leads to understand that there isn’t a unique way of looking at this phenomenon. With this intervention project, it is intended to understand the factors that lead to the success / failure in the English subject in a school in Funchal, according to the point of view of students and teachers of English, and find strategies that lead to improved success in that subject. In order to achieve the intended objectives, focus groups were carried out with students and teachers of that school, with a total of 14 students and 3 teachers of English. It was concluded that school success depends on a multiplicity of factors, ranging from the behavior, commitment and study by the students, to the strategies used by the teachers in the teaching of the subject. It was also stressed the important role of parents, particularly as regards their participation in the school life of their children.
