The environmental impacts arising from the use of polymeric materials is a serious problem because these materials have a long period of degradation, being accumulated in the environment. In this context, the interest in the production and use of biodegradable polymeric materials from renewable sources is being promoted as a policy of environmental protection and sustainability. The rigid polyurethane foams are polymers of great importance in several application areas, particularly in construction and equipment manufacturing, due to their unique properties of isolation. One strategy used in the attempt of improving these materials biodegradability, is the use of natural components, with intrinsic capacity of biodegradation, in the formulation process. The main objective of this work was the implementation of different tests in order to evaluate the biodegradation of several rigid polyurethane foams. Two lignin based foams, obtained from renewable sources, and one commercial foam were evaluated. As a first approach, tests in petri dishes were performed to check the growth of the microorganism in the presence of the various foams. A positive growth was observed both in the visual analysis of the plates and by optical microscopy. Subsequently, respirometry tests in liquid and solid (soil) medium were performed. In these tests the rate of biodegradation was measured in terms of the CO2 produced by the microorganism. The foams were also examined by optical microscopy. It was observed that all foams suffered biodegradation, with Indulin AT being the most affected one, followed by Alcell and finally the commercial foam. In the biodegradation tests carried out on solid medium, a comparison between the biodegradation in soil with and without the addition of inoculum was also performed. The obtained results demonstrated that the addition of the fungus Aspergillus niger enhances the biodegradation of the foams.
