O presente Relatório Científico Final do Trabalho de Investigação Aplicada tem como objetivo principal perceber qual foi o papel que a Guarda Nacional Republicana desempenhou durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial. Para a realização do presente trabalho, decidimos enveredar por uma investigação histórica com uma abordagem bibliográfica, analisando para o efeito documentação da época, como por exemplo, ordens de serviço, livros, entre outras, que se encontra plasmada na bibliografia. Os objetos de estudo deste trabalho prendem-se com o intuito de verificar quais as mudanças que esta força de segurança sofreu com a guerra no que concerne à sua constituição orgânica, e a forma como evoluiu a sua implementação pelo território nacional, no sentido de perceber como a guerra influenciou o seu processo de implementação. Com este estudo, pudemos comprovar que para além da elevada instabilidade política no País, o período da Grande Guerra caracteriza-se económica e socialmente pela crise financeira, carestia de vida, conflituosidade social e agitação nas ruas, levando a GNR a uma intensa atividade dentro de Portugal. Neste trabalho analisámos qual o contributo que a GNR veio dar a Portugal durante o conflito, quer dentro das fronteiras, quer fora destas. Concludentemente, a GNR desempenhou funções na área da retaguarda do Corpo Expedicionário Português, tendo para o efeito, enviado subunidades constituídas para França. Assim, era considerada como uma força de confiança, sendo utilizada para manter a segurança quer em Portugal, quer na área da retaguarda do Corpo Expedicionário Português, vendo-se assim forçada a alterar e a adotar novas missões, que não estavam previstas inicialmente aquando a sua formação, de forma a corresponder a todas as vicissitudes que a guerra veio trazer a Portugal e os portugueses.

The present Scientific Final Report of the Applied Research Work aims to realize what role did the Guarda Nacional Republicana play during the first World War. In order to carry out this work, we decided to embark on a historical research with a bibliographical dimension. To achieve this goal we have analyzed documentation of that time and the diverse literature that is mentioned in this research. The objects of this study aims to verify what changes has the Guarda Nacional Republicana suffered with the war and what is the relation with its organic constitution and how the implementation of this force has evolved throughout the national territory, in order to see how the war has influenced the spread of the same. With this study, we were able to prove that besides the high political instability in the country, the period of the great war is characterized economically and socially by the financial crisis, cost of life, social conflict and unrest in the streets, leading GNR to an intense activity in Portugal. In this paper we have examined what contribution the GNR gave to Portugal during the conflict, both within and outside these borders. Concluding, the GNR has played roles in the rear area of the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps, having for that purpose, sent to France constituted subunits. So, it was regarded as a reliable force, being used to keep security both in Portugal and in the rear area of the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps, thus forced to change and adopt new missions that were not foreseen initially upon its formation, in order to match all the vicissitudes that the war has brought to Portugal and to the Portuguese people.
