Description

The Portuguese Agricultural sector has been improving and presenting interesting and significant growth figures, particularly over the recent years. Technology has much played its role on this development. Either on the collaborative and organization management share or, and especially, in production through the introduction of hardware and software solutions which are able to provide key performance indicators that are important to improve and raise total production output. This assignment aimed to build a tool made out of a survey through which one will be able to find out a farm’s degree of information technology. The survey was built in two distinct stages: During the first stage it was designed a version (APPENDIX I) based on all the data collected in studies and scientific articles; the final version of the survey and the main goal of this assignment (APPENDIX II) was designed based on the first survey version and also on the data gathered from interviews taken with farm managers and IT managers. The interviews allowed to understand that farm managers are strongly aware about the increasingly need of technology in their production units. According to those, only technology allows them to play in an increasingly competitive market where exports became extremely important. The set of interviews also allowed to understand that IT managers offer solutions designed to satisfy specific needs, thus making them specialists. They totally focus on improving their solutions rather seeking for the development of other solutions that would attend different market needs. By collecting data through the use of the survey developed in this assignment one will be able to measure and identify a farm’s degree of information technology on a 5 items scale: ―No information technology at all‖; ―Low‖; ―Sufficient‖; ―High; and finally, ―Extremely High‖. The scale used is based on the model developed and proposed on this assignment. If the model is to satisfy the requirements for future studies upon the industry, it might be used for that purpose along with all the necessary adaptations.
