Description
The current study has as a goal to understand the way of the students of second grade solve subtraction tasks. From this goal I sought the following question: Which strategies do students use when solving subtraction problems? The theoretical framework includes the following subjects: learning of subtraction; the mental calculation and the number sense, and the mental calculation strategies associated with subtraction. Regarding the methodology, the study is characterized as a qualitative investigation of an interpretative nature. It was attended by 20 students from a 2nd grade class, and three of those students were chosen for a detailed analysis of their resolutions. The data collection took place in a total of four and a half weeks through participant observation, informal interviews and document analysis. The pedagogical proposal included a set of numerical chains and subtraction problems whose purpose was to develop the mental calculation associated with this arithmetic operation. The results of this investigation show that the three selected students use different strategies to solve the proposed problems. The analysis of their resolutions shows that while one of the students always opts for the use of the same strategy, type N10, the other two students opt for several strategies, predominating the strategies of type A10 and N10. The results show that students are increasingly turning to the numerical line to support their calculations, as suggested in the initial task.
