Description
Teaching has been subject to profound changes and is considered one of the most stressful professions, where the chronic occupational stress can lead to burnout. The main aim of this research was to analyze the relationship between perceived justice and burnout in teachers of higher education. Thus, we want to know the perception of teachers on organizational justice, analyze their levels of burnout, assess whether the perception of justice is connected with the development of burnout and verify if the individual factors are influencing perceptions of organizational justice and burnout. The organizational justice has been defined according to five dimensions: interpersonal, informational, procedural, distributive rewards, distributive tasks (Rego, 2001a). The burnout was defined according to three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment (Maslach and Jackson, 1997). The sample consisted of 120 teachers from five universities. The results obtained in this study reveal that the teachers have lower levels with regard to procedural justice and distributive justice of the rewards in the organizational context in which they are inserted. Regarding the level of burnout, these professionals have average levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment. As to the association between organizational justice and burnout, we found that distributive justice of the tasks is associated negatively with emotional exhaustion and that distributive justice of the rewards is associated with personal accomplishment. In respect to the perception of teachers on organizational justice, the statistically significant differences found, show the association of some individual variables such as employment status, scheme of service, tenure and number of daily work hours. Regarding the individual factors associated with the burnout, it appears that male teachers have higher levels of depersonalization and those who serve full time, without dedication, have a higher emotional exhaustion than those who work part-time. Moreover, it is observed that teachers who work from 8 to 9 hours per day have higher levels of depersonalization than their colleagues who work from 7 to 8 hours.
