O presente trabalho de investigação tem como objetivo identificar as características e fatores que influenciam a motivação dos militares da Guarda Nacional Republicana em Unidades Territoriais, verificar se existem diferenças entre realidades operacionais distintas e se a motivação influência o desempenho dos militares. Neste estudo foram utilizados dois instrumentos, um referente à medição das dimensões de motivação e outro relativo ao desempenho, tendo sido aplicados aos militares do Comando Territorial de Faro e Portalegre perfazendo uma amostra de 213 militares. Após a obtenção da base de dados, procedeu-se a uma análise quantitativa através do SPSS, realizando-se análise descritiva, análise fatorial, comparações múltiplas de médias e correlações de Bravais-Pearson. Os resultados permitem apurar que o desejo em servir o interesse público são características motivadoras e que as oportunidades de crescimento, o reconhecimento, estatuto e interesses pessoais são fatores motivacionais. Concluiu-se ainda que a valorização da motivação dos militares varia consoante a atividade operacional existente, justificando as diferenças motivacionais existentes nas realidades operacionais distintas. Por fim, constatase que a motivação dos militares tem impacto no seu desempenho, nomeadamente no esforço extraordinário e na eficácia.

Abstract The present research aims to identify the characteristics and factors that influence the motivation of the Guarda Nacional Republicana in military territorial units, to check if there are differences between distinct operating realities and if the motivation influences the performance of the military. In this study we used two instruments, one concerning the measurement of dimensions of motivation and other performance related, having been applied to 213 military in the Territorial Command of Faro and Portalegre. Data collection was then submitted to a quantitative analysis through several statistical programs, a descriptive analysis, multiple comparisons and correlations of Bravais-Pearson. The results established that, the desire to serve the public interest is a motivating feature and that the opportunities of growth, recognition, status and personal interests are motivating factors. It was also noted that the appreciation of the military’s motivations varies depending on the existing operational activity, therefore justifying the motivational differences between distinct operational realities. Finally, it appears that the degree of the military’s motivation has a solid impact on their performance.
