O presente relatório científico aborda uma investigação que se intitula de “A introdução da G3 na Guerra de África; Implicações nas Táticas, Técnicas e na Organização do Pelotão de Infantaria no Teatro de Operações Angolano”, que pretende identificar a importância da G3 no pelotão de infantaria. Visto que o conhecimento histórico é fulcral a qualquer comandante, e sendo a G3 um “símbolo” de base da nossa formação militar e de elevado reconhecimento, procura-se contribuir para o conhecimento da História de Portugal, do Exército Português, podendo cooperar na resolução de problemas atuais. Deste modo pretende-se analisar a passagem da arma ordinária, para a arma automática e as suas implicações no Teatro de Operações angolano. Este relatório está estruturado em três partes. A primeira referente à introdução, expondo uma apresentação do trabalho de investigação. Na segunda é realizado um levantamento documental e consulta crítica de literatura, privilegiando a análise de conteúdo. Por fim, na parte conclusiva testa-se e confirma-se as hipóteses, respondendo às perguntas derivadas. Tais questões e hipóteses desenvolveram-se para responder à questão de partida a fim de atingir os objetivos delineados. A metodologia cingiu-se na análise de forma cronológica e comparativa, de conteúdos bibliográficos, complementada por fontes primárias. Verificou-se que com a introdução da G3 no pelotão de infantaria, no Teatro de Operações de Angola, ocorreram alterações na organização deste, nomeadamente a substituição das metralhadoras ligeiras das secções por G3 com bipé. Esta alteração levou à extinção do grupo a três homens por cada metralhadora ligeira, surgindo mais dois atiradores normais e o atirador bipé em cada esquadra. Por este facto a esquadra de atiradores passa a ser constituída por cinco atiradores, dos quais um de G3 com bipé. Ao nível tático e técnico não houve diretamente alterações, mas sim a possibilidade de as executar na plenitude, tal como foram projetadas.

Abstract This scientific report concerns an investigation entitled "The introduction of the G3 in the War in Africa; its implications for tactics, techniques and the organization of the Infantry Platoon in the Angolan Theater of Operations". It aims to identify the importance of the G3 in the infantry platoon. Since historical knowledge is essential for any commander, the G3 is the “symbol" of our basic military training and is highly recognizable. We seek to contribute to the knowledge of the history of Portugal, and the Portuguese Army, and we believe this may contribute to the resolution of some current problems. We intend to analyze the development of the G3 from an ordinary weapon, to the automatic weapon and to point out the implications in the Angolan Theater of Operations. This report is structured in three parts, the first being the introduction, giving a presentation of the research work. Secondly, a review of the relevant documentary evidence, with content analysis. Finally, in the concluding part hypotheses are developed and tested, which lead to further questions. Such questions and hypothesis were developed to answer the question of departure in order to achieve our defined goals. The methodology is based on the analysis of chronological and comparative information, bibliographic content, and is supplemented from primary sources. It is possible to verify that with the introduction of the G3 in the infantry platoon, in the Angolan Theater of Operations, there have been changes in this organization, in particular the replacement of light machine guns of sections by the G3 with bipod. The three men for each light machine gun were no longer needed, and could be replaced by one man, giving two extra riflemen and the G3 operative in each precinct. For this reason the squad is made up of five elements, including one with the G3 with bipod. At a tactical and technical level there were no direct changes, but rather the possibility of performing with increased effectiveness and efficiency.
