A revolução industrial, introduziu nas cidades europeias fortes indícios de crescimento e de transformação. Em Portugal, apesar de tardiamente e de uma forma mais ténue a revolução industrial implementou nas principais cidades, Porto e Lisboa, indícios de crescimento, sendo o aumento populacional um dos mais significativos originando graves carências habitacionais a partir do final do século XIX. Contudo, só no princípio do século XX se iniciaram políticas habitacionais para a resolução destas carências, que, no entanto, não se fizeram sentir de forma eficaz. Após a revolução de 1974, surgiram as primeiras atividades no campo habitacional, o caso das cooperativas de habitação económica que emergiram em grande força a partir de 1976 nas principais áreas metropolitanas de Lisboa e Porto. O grande Porto, surge como local de grande implementação cooperativa, destacando-se, o concelho de Matosinhos. É desta forma, que surge o objeto de estudo desta dissertação: a transformação da forma urbana de Matosinhos através da implementação das Cooperativas de habitação económica. O concelho de Matosinhos emerge como estudo de caso, onde foram selecionadas as três freguesias com o maior número de intervenções cooperativas: Matosinhos, Leça da Palmeira e Senhora da Hora. Os objetivos da dissertação centram-se na determinação da transformação da forma urbana do estudo de caso, as matrizes morfológicas geradas através das diversas implementações e os níveis de qualidade espaciais introduzidos. A investigação está dividida em três momentos importantes. O primeiro momento baseia-se na revisão da literatura e na análise dos diferentes conceitos inerentes à temática, de onde foram retirados os indicadores para a análise posterior. O segundo momento, corresponde à análise da área de estudo, Matosinhos e das cooperativas de habitação económica, de onde surgiram os indicadores que respondem aos objetivos propostos. Por último é elaborada a sistematização da análise do estudo de caso que origina as conclusões da presente investigação.

Abstract: The industrial revolution introduced in European cities strong signs of growth and transformation. In Portugal, although lately and in a more tenuous form, the industrial revolution has implemented in major cities, Lisbon and Oporto, signs of growth, being the population increase one of the most significant and the one who caused serious housing needs in the late nineteenth century. However, only at the beginning of the twentieth century were started housing policies to solve these needs, which, however, were not felt effectively. After the 1974 revolution, appeared the first activities in housing field, as the economic housing cooperatives that emerged in great force since 1976 in major metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Oporto. The great Oporto emerges as a place of large cooperative implementation, being remarked the municipality of Matosinhos. This is the way that appears the object of study of this dissertation: the transformation of urban form of Matosinhos through the implementation of economic housing cooperatives. The Matosinhos municipality is the study case, where three parishes are selected by stocking a larger number of cooperative interventions: Matosinhos, Leça da Palmeira and Senhora da Hora. The objectives of the dissertation are focused on determining the transformation of urban form, morphological matrices generated through the various implementations and spatial quality levels introduced. The research is divided in two important moments. The first moment is based on the literature review and on the analysis of the different concepts related to the theme, from where indicators were removed for further analysis. The second moment corresponds to the analysis of the study area and the economic housing cooperatives, from where appear indicators that respond to the proposed objectives.
