O mundo pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial, dividido em dois blocos, vivia um clima de tensão gerado pelo bipolarismo de raízes ideológicas antagónicas. A crescente ameaça vinda de Leste levou a que os Estados Unidos da América desejassem propagar a sua esfera de influência ao Ociedente Europeu através de uma aliança militar. Portugal, como país de uma antiga tradição atlântica não poderia deixar de fazer parte dos planos de negociações dos norte-americanos. É assim objectivo deste trabalho dar a conhecer a importância de Portugal no quadro da criação de uma aliança para a defesa da Europa Ocidental. Perceber como evoluíram as negociações que levaram a que Portugal aderisse ao Pacto do Atlântico. Dar a conhecer as entidades políticas e militares que estiveram directamente envolvidas nas negociações e as suas perspectivas. Numa primeira fase efectuamos uma análise do ambiente europeu no pós-Segunda Guerra. Depois efectuamos uma análise documental de historiadores e especialistas nestas matérias e respondemos às questões inicialmente levantadas. Os Açores foram de facto o motor de arranque para que Portugal fosse chamado a integrar a aliança Atlântica. Oliveira Salazar mostrou que era um homem que apesar do seu autoritarismo sabia ouvir e ver mais além, pois partindo de uma posição de fortes reservas em relação à adesão acabou por perceber que, de facto, a adesão ao Pacto do Atlântico era o melhor para Portugal.

Abstract After the Second World War the political world was divided into ideologically opposed blocks living in a tense climate. The growing threat from the East led the United States to seek a military alliance with Western Europe. Portugal, an Atlantic country with many past relations with North America, could not fail to be included in these negotiations. The objective of this paper is to show the importance of Portugal in the creation of an alliance for the defence of Western Europe and to understand to development of negotiations that took Portugal into the Atlantic Pact. Also to identify the political and military entities that were directly involved in those negotiations. In the first phase we made an analysis of the situation in Europe just after the Second World War. Next we made an analysis of the historical documents and important people involved in this matter and answered the questions we put in the beginning. The Azores were the main reason for Portugal to be made a member of the Atlantic Alliance. Oliveira Salazar was an authoritarian man, but he also had an eyeon the future of Portugal. In the beginning he had strong reservations about the Pact, but in the end he understood that it would be the best for Portugal.
