Abstract Combined Arms have been applied since past times, but only a few centuries ago does the term appear, and only than does the topic start to be studied. The XX Century is full of examples of the application of the concept of Combined Arms. In the XVII Century Antoine Jomini starts to approach the study of the topic. Since than there have been many persons who have studied the theme and thus to name a few illustrious Military Men as John Fuller, Liddel Hart, Heinz Guderian, Mikhail Tuchachevsky, amongst others. In this investigation we shall define the concept of Combined Arms and the factors that influence their use in the XX Century. The referred to factors are the Doctrines, the Tactics, the Organization, the Equipment and the Armament. We shall, therefore, effect a historical analyse of the factors, dividing each factor in four parts: 1st World War, the Period between Wars, 2nd World War and Post 1945 until the end of Century XX. We shall understand how each factor influenced the different Armies in the manner of Combining Arms, and the reason for their success or failure to succeed when they were applied in conflicts in the XX Century. The Armies analysed in this investigation are the principal intervention Armies in the World Wars, or be it, the French, the Germans, the English, the Soviets and the Americans. We also dedicate a chapter to the Portuguese Army, because since we joined NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), we started to form Combined Arms units to fulfil the requisitions imposed by the Alliance, which we adhered to in 1949. For the art of combining different Arms to result, and to be able to obtain an effective synergy between them, it is essential that the Commanders understand that each Arm is fundamental, and that they put aside traditionalisms, so that nothing puts in jeopardy the success in the modern battlefield.
