Description
The attitude towards the school subject Portuguese and self-concept in students attending vocational education Abstract: The objective of this paper is to verify the relation between self-perception and the attitude towards the Portuguese language subject in students attending vocational secondary education courses. One hundred and eighty-three students, male and female, attending vocational secondary education courses at a career school in the Alentejo region have participated in the study. There were eighty four boys and ninety-nine girls aged between fifteen and twenty-two years old. The students answered the questionnaire in “Atitudes face ao Português” and also answered to the topics of the self-concept scale in “Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents” by Susan Harter (1988). In general, the results prove the existence of a relation between self-perception and the attitude towards the Portuguese language subject. Some correlations were found: in the Self-Perception Profile, between the Self-concept (Romantic relationships domain) and the QAFP- Questionnaire of Attitude towards the Portuguese Language (Likes and Motivation domain); in the Importance Ratings, between the Behavioral conduct subscale and the QAFP (Likes and Motivation domain); among others.
