Este trabalho insere-se no estudo do processo de transição demográfica e analisa o processo de declínio da fecundidade e suas implicações sobre o envelhecimento populacional brasileiro. O objectivo central é desvendar, ainda que de forma exploratória, como vem ocorrendo o processo de transição demográfica e suas possíveis diferenciações, bem como os factores que a envolvem e melhor a caracterizam. Seguiu-se uma metodologia quantitativa e de análise descritiva dos dados e documentos disponibilizados pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística e pelo United Nations Statistics Division. Verificou-se importante diferença regional, racial e social no processo de transição. A variável renda per capita revelou-se como o elemento fulcral na caracterização das dissemelhanças encontradas. O sistema de segurança social por sua vez tem-se revelado importante instrumento de redução da pobreza entre idosos, configurando-se entretanto como uma área bastante crítica correndo inclusive o risco de insolvência futura caso não sejam realizados os ajustes necessários. ## ABSTRACT Growing old in a society in developing and marked by social inequality. This work is the study of the process of demographic transition and examines the process of fertility decline and implications for the Brazilian population aging. The central objective is to discover, albeit exploratory, as it has the process of demographic transition and its possible differences, and the factors surrounding it and the best characterized. There followed a quantitative methodology and descriptive analysis of data and documents provided by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics and the United Nations Statistics Division. There are important regional differences, racial and social transition. The per capita income variable turned out to be the key element in the characterization of the dissimilarities found. The social security system in turn has proved an important tool in alleviating poverty among the elderly, becoming however, as a very critical area including running the risk of future insolvency if not made the necessary adjustments.
