A presença e o papel da religião nas Comemorações Centenárias de 1940

The Double Centenary of 1940 was, probably, the greatest and most prestigious moment of the Estado Novo. The use of these commemorations by the regime was quite evident, using them as a vehicle to project certain ideological and doctrinaire ideas, structural to the regime. But it was also the year of the signature of the Concordata with the Vatican, putting an end to the religious question, initially started by the liberalism and taken out to a certain extreme by the republicans. In this article we will try to focus in a particular aspect of these commemorations, the «religion», and understand how it was used by the political and ecclesiastic’s authorities; on the other hand, we will also try to show how the plastic arts represented the religious theme.

O Duplo Centenário de 1940 foi, possivelmente, o período de maior prestígio e fulgor do Estado Novo. A utilização destas comemorações pelo regime foi bastante evidente, tanto no seu planeamento como na forma como conseguiu usa‑las como veículo de projecção ideológica e doutrinária. Mas foi também o ano da assinatura da Concordata com o Vaticano, colocando um fim à questão religiosa, iniciada pelo liberalismo e levada a um certo extremo pelos republicanos. Neste artigo tentar‑se‑á analisar a forma como a «religião» foi projectada, tanto pelo poder político quer pelas autoridades eclesiásticas e, noutra vertente, iremos também focar a forma como as artes plásticas representaram o tópico religioso.
