Moisture is one of the main causes for building degradation. Therefore, the development of models that allow the definition of qualitative and quantitative rules for the design of building components, and the building itself as a whole is a task of great importance. A mathematical model of relative humidity variation was conceived, based on composition of interior surfaces, ventilation rate, vapour production and outside climate. The calculation theory for hygroscopic materials contribution to the humidity balance is the main difference to other existing models. The elaboration of the computer program RH2000, resulted on a tool for numerical simulation of the relative humidity variation inside a room, based on that model. This program was built for use on a personal computer using Windows operating system. Several simulations were made to evaluate the influence of the models parameters in the process of relative humidity variation. It was given special attention to the analysis of the effect of the presence of hygroscopic surfaces in rooms showing different hygrothermal conditions. The results of that study demonstrated the significant role played by the hygroscopic inertia on controlling inside relative humidity variation.
