The present dissertation focuses on the study of common points in the life and workof two important names of international architecture: Fernando Távora and Lucio Costa.Leading names in transition moments, in Portugal and in Brazil respectively, soon realizethat the Modern Movement was much more than a passing style, and that its basescome from ancestral orders and rules, such as the great classic monuments. In this way,after a phase in which an initial abstractionism was necessary for the imposition of thenew aesthetic and modern technique, both turned to a study of the local cultures andtraditions, appropriating them as a component of extreme importance in the elaborationof their projects, never neglecting the constant evolution of constructive techniques.By collecting historical data, organizing them in order to tell the desired history per se,and an analysis of theoretical and practical works - two case studies for each architect - itis thus proposed in this work to compare, firstly, the attitude of the architects towards anoutdated style of architecture ("A Casa Portuguesa" in Portugal, and the "Neo-colonial"Movement in Brazil), followed by the knowledge of the modern "new world", whichwas "presented" to them by Le Corbusier and, finally, the interpretations and revisionsof this same Modern Movement, made by Fernando Távora and Lucio Costa, who havesometimes been so close to each other, although referring to countries with such differingconditions and characteristics.
