Description

The Industrial Revolution in the nineteenth century, coupled with the armed conflicts of the twentieth century, led to profound modifications in society and cities, turning sharply cityscapes. Consolidated territories find themselves overpopulated at first, then, due to the periferial development, abandoned and derelict, or destroyed by wars, causing the emerging needs to recover and rebuild the historic centers.As a result of this processes, at the end of twentieth century and up to today, politics of intervention in the ancient city arise and develop through architectural and urban planning, along with the constant evolution of techniques and materials that enable different approaches and interventions in the process of modernization of the ancient city.In this context, the development of the concepts of "monument" and "heritage" contributed to the understanding of all the historic center's constituents' value, not only it's historical monuments, as part of the global architectural heritage of the historic city, extolling the relevance it's recovery and rehabilitation hold on the development and revival of the city.In turn, the concepts of "renewal", "rehabilitation" and urban "recovery", developed over the decades, play a key role in this process of intervention in the existing city, producing examples that prove the importance of investing in integrated urban rehabilitation of historic centers, in view of the development of society, economy, architecture, in short, of the city.Thus, considering the process of abandonment, neglect and decay that the historic center of Oporto city has undergone in recent decades, this work focuses on the processes of intervention already undertaken towards its' urban, social, economic and cultural recovery and revitalization, highlighting the improvements that an investment in architecture and the qualified work of a technician in this area can bring to the process of recovery of the city.
