The Regulation of the Characteristics of the Thermal Performance of Buildings (DL 80/2006- RCCTE in Portuguese) foresees a calculation method for the thermal losses produced by the elements in touch with the soil using linear coefficient values of thermal transmission. This point of view has become harmful for the thermal analysis of buildings, as for, checking the nominal useful energy needs, but especially for the buildings with ground floor or with a major opaque area in touch with the soil. In this dissertation, it is made an analysis of the methodologies proposed for this type of thermal calculation in Spain, France and Portugal. It is also considered the ISO 13370 norm that includes all the normative reference text for these specific situations. As an analysis of sensibility and application of the existent methodologies, nine schematic examples that reveal several situations of elements in touch with the soil were idealized, such as, different geometries. It was also taken into consideration real examples of buildings that follow this kind of characteristics. It was applied, to these specific buildings, several calculation methods that are being studied but also the thermal calculation provided by the RCCTE. This fact allows us to get an idea on the real influence of the different methodologies on the general outcome of the building. After knowing the results of applying the Portuguese, Spanish and French calculation methods, it is elaborated a new calculation method to be proposed to the future RCCTE inspection, which aims to an improvement on the calculation of the thermal losses made by the elements that are in touch with the soil. Once the calculation method, on proposal, is elaborated, it is applied to every example previously considered; obtaining a range of results that will prove the improvement when compared with the current Portuguese legislation. KEYWORDS: in touch with the soil, thermal losses, wall, floor, RCCTE inspection.
