Description

The presence of moisture in building elements is one of the major causes of building degradation, namely the action of rising damp on walls of ancient buildings with historical interest. The water from the soil migrates through the porous materials by osmosis, leading to the appearance of several pathologies. In order to decrease its effect on high thick and heterogenic walls, a treatment technique is developed, known as wall base ventilation. This work aims to evaluate the ventilation systems of the base of walls performance in ancient historic buildings. This work was also carried out a instrumentation and monitoring of an interior system of wall base ventilation in the Santa Maria Church, Vila Boa do Bispo, Marco de Canaveses, in order to find out the causes that are responsible for the emerged pathologies after implementation of this technique for the treatment of rising damp. KEYWORDS: Rising Damp, Wall Base Ventilation, Experimental Study, Historic Buildings.
