Relatório de estágio apresentado à Escola Superior de Comunicação Social como parte dos requisitos para obtenção de grau de mestre em Jornalismo.
O presente relatório foi elaborado no âmbito do Mestrado em Jornalismo, da Escola Superior de Comunicação Social, com vista à obtenção do grau de mestre, e é referente ao estágio de três meses, realizado pela autora, na Lusa -Agência de Notícias de Portugal S.A. Nele procedemos à análise concreta das mudanças ocorridas nas relações entre jornalistas e fontes de informação, componente chave nas rotinas de produção jornalística, antes e depois do advento da Internet, mas também de outros dispositivos digitais, em particular os computadores fixos e portáteis, telemóveis, smartphones e tablets. Partindo do objetivo formulado, procuramos responder às seguintes questões: em que sentido se alterou a relação entre jornalistas e fontes com o advento dos dispositivos digitais? Como são interpretadas pelos profissionais do jornalismo essas mudanças? Quais as possibilidades e problemas colocados pela utilização sistemática dos meios digitais? Em que medida as práticas jornalísticas, e mais especificamente a recolha de informação, foram alteradas pelo novo contexto da digitalização? No sentido de encontrar respostas para as perguntas de partida, optámos por utilizar uma metodologia qualitativa sustentada na realização de entrevistas semi-diretivas a cinco jornalistas da agência Lusa, que experienciaram o processo de transição do analógico para a o digital. Analisadas as respostas, as principais conclusões a que chegámos foram: do ponto de vista técnico, é notório que houve um conjunto de dispositivos que caíram em desuso (telefone fixo, fax, telex, etc.), tendo sido substituídos, essencialmente, pelo email, Skype e redes sociais como o Facebook. Estes últimos contribuíram para aumentar significativamente o fluxo informativo, que ocorre agora praticamente em tempo real; do ponto de vista da prática jornalística, tudo indica que novas fontes têm ganho espaço no panorama mediático graças à facilidade de acesso aos jornalistas no novo meio, a Internet, mas tal não tem significado ganhos em termos de diversidade e pluralidade de informação: os jornalistas tendem a procurar fontes estáveis, que lhes garantam um fluxo de informação contínuo, e as fontes tendem a procurar o órgão certo para projetar a sua voz. Consequentemente, cria-se uma relação de interdependência entre jornalistas e fontes, com os jornalistas a tornarem-se cada vez mais dependentes das fontes, por força dos constrangimentos da profissão. Ainda assim, defendemos que os jornalistas da Lusa estão conscientes dos problemas que estão em jogo e se esforçam por produzir notícias rigorosas e credíveis.
ABSTRACT: The present research was conducted in the ambit of the Master’s in Journalism from the School of Higher Education in Communication and Media Studies, for the completion of the Master’s Degree in the same program, and it is relative to a three month internship carried out by the author in the Portuguese news agency Lusa. This work’s main focus is to analyze the changes occurred on the relations between journalists and information sources over time, which represent key components of the journalistic production routines. In this context, we differentiate between two periods, both before and after the advent of the internet, examining the changes occurred with the dissemination of digital technologies and devices, from desktop computers, to laptops, mobile phones, smartphones or tablets. With this objective in mind, we thus focus on exploring the following topics: in which way did the journalists’ relation with their sources changed since the advent of the digital era? How are these changes interpreted by media professionals? What are the benefits and the challenges imposed by the systematic utilization of digital media? In what way were journalistic practices – and in particular information collection – affected by the new digital context? In order to explore the multiple issues raised by these themes, we chose to adopt a qualitative approach for this investigation, supported by the realization of semi-structured interviews to five journalists from Lusa, all of whom experienced professionals who went through the transition from the analogic to the digital supports. After a thorough review and analysis of all the answers some of the major conclusions drawn were: from a practical standpoint, the abandonment of several devices – such as the telephone, fax, telex, etc. – which were replaced by more modern means of communication such as the email, Skype or social networks, such as Facebook. All of these contributed for the significant increase of the flux of information, now conducted in nearly real-time; from the standpoint of journalistic practices, new sources have also affirmed their importance due to the ease of access to journalists and the new media panorama. In this context the Internet has represented the most significant breakthrough, which has not however translated into great diversity or plurality of information. On the contrary, journalists tend to rely on steady sources of information, which guarantee a continuous flux of information, while information sources seek the right channels to project their voices. There is therefore a relation of interdependence between journalists and information sources, with journalists increasingly more dependent on the sources, under the constraints of the profession. Even so, we argue that all journalists from Lusa are well aware of most of these challenges, striving to produce reliable and rigorous news.
