Description
ABSTRACT - Currently the patient safety is a subject of extreme relevance in the area of health worldwide. In Portugal, the first steps are being taken and the literature and studies on this subject that reflect the dimension of adverse events arising from the provision of healthcare are still scarce. Objective: This thesis aims to obtain a body of scientific evidence, gathering information about the most notified adverse events in the hospital environment and a Portuguese residential structure for elderly people, both of which target the elderly. Methodology: Two articles were elaborated, one being a systematic review of the literature and the other a descriptive, correlational and quantitative study carried out in a residential structure for elderly people. Results: Of the four primary studies selected, higher values for adverse events related to medication were found and similar results were recorded in the residential structure for elderly people. Conclusion: It is extremely important to identify the most frequent adverse events of a health institution to promote patient safety. The success of this task will depend on the involvement of all health professionals who are concerned with improving the quality of care provided.
