A depressão é considerada hoje em dia, um problema de saúde importante que afecta pessoas de todas as idades, levando a sentimentos de tristeza e isolamento social que muitas vezes têm como desfecho o suicídio. Neste sentido, este estudo teve como principal objectivo determinar os níveis de depressão no idoso bem como a influência dos aspectos sócio - demográficos, grau de satisfação com a vida e nível de independência nas actividades básicas de vida diária. A colheita de dados englobou a caracterização sócio - demográfica da amostra; a avaliação do grau de satisfação com a vida em quatro domínios específicos: saúde física, saúde mental, capacidade física e envolvimento social; o nível de dependência nas actividades básicas de vida diária e a depressão no idoso. Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo, do tipo não experimental (correlacional - preditivo), sendo a amostra não probabilística, seleccionada segundo uma amostragem por conveniência. Participaram nele 119 idosos, com uma média de idades de 78 anos, residentes nos concelhos, de Tavira, Olhão e de Faro, a viver no domicílio ou a frequentar a ACASO – Associação Cultural e de Apoio Social de Olhão, tanto os residentes no Lar, como em Regime de Centro de Dia. Os resultados verificados indicam que a maioria dos idosos da amostra encontram-se com depressão ligeira. Aspectos sócio - demográficos como o género, a idade, estado civil, nível de escolaridade, o local onde vive, particularmente o facto de se encontrarem institucionalizados e a presença de doenças concomitantes influenciam a depressão no idoso. Também o grau de independência assim como o grau de satisfação com a vida influenciam negativamente a depressão. ABSTRACT The depression is considered nowadays, a problem of important in all the ages, having led the feelings of sadness and social isolation that many times have as outcome the suicide. So, the main objective of this study was to determine the levels of depression in the aged one as well as the influence of the aspects partner - demographic, degree of satisfaction with the life and level of independence in the basic activities of daily life. The collect of information includes the characterization partner - demographic of the sample; the evaluation of the degree of satisfaction with the life in four specific areas: physical health, mental health, physical capacity and social envolvement; the level of dependence in the basic activities of daily life and the depression in the aged one. It is a quantitative study of the non-experimental (predictive-correlates) the sample is not probabilistic and selected with a convenience sampling. In this study participated 119 seniors with a mean age of 78 years old, residents in the zones of Tavira, Olhão and Faro, to live in the domicile or a attendance at the ACASO - Cultural Association and of Social Support of Olhão, as much the residents in the Home, as in Regimen of Center of Day. The results verified indicate that the majority of the aged ones of the sample in study meets with fast depression. Aspects partner - demographic as sex, the age, marital state, level of school, the place where it lives, particularly the fact of if finding institutionalized and the presence of concomitant illnesses influence the depression in the aged one. Also the independence degrees influence the form negative the depression as well as the degree of satisfaction with the life.
