Este estudo tem como referência as Artes Plásticas no contexto de Cabo Verde, espaço geográfico de São Vicente, onde as Artes estão devidamente estabelecidas como ferramenta crucial para o estudo da (re)formulação da cultura, permitindo problematizar como este sector adere e procura a pós modernidade, desvendando o(s) modo(s) como o processo artístico se transforma, reformula modos de criação, consumo e representação simbólica, adequando-o a uma paisagem cultural em reestruturação. O problema do estudo alicerça-se na constatação da falta de um circuito de divulgação e promoção das Artes Plásticas em Cabo Verde, que tem criado assimetrias de acesso às condições de produção e divulgação entre os criadores. A investigação etnográfica, com recurso à história de vida, foi o método adotado, que ajudou a responder à necessidade de identificar transformações necessárias na reestruturação da paisagem cultural, ao nível do impacto do trabalho dos artistas e do conhecimento do seu património, recorrendo-se à utilização de instrumentos de observação, entrevista, fotografia e vídeo, por permitirem dar a primazia aos artistas selecionados, observá-los nos seus contextos, deixá-los falar e escutá-los, para melhor compreender os seus mecanismos de criatividade e produção artística nas relações com a sua cultura e a procura e o alargamento gradual do mercado. A escolha da amostra recaiu em quatro artistas que residem na cidade do Mindelo. Os resultados desta investigação permitiram verificar como as Artes Plásticas são controladas por valores do establishment, não sendo apoiadas por um discurso que as legitime enquanto criação artística. Os temas abordados pelos quatro artistas, ilustrados com reproduções incluídas neste estudo, falam da sua experiência artística e estética e da importância atribuída pelos quatro às Festas Tradicionais (e.g. Carnaval). As conclusões confirmam que as Artes Plásticas ainda não obtiveram reconhecimento e são, em larga medida entendidas como atividades hiddenstream. Conclui-se também ser fundamental apostar numa educação artística que promova a reflexão sobre hierarquias estético-culturais dominantes e as fronteiras resultantes de estereótipos culturais e académicos.
This study seeks to investigate the role Plastic Arts plays in the context of Cape Verde, in the geographical area of São Vicente, where the arts are well established as a key tool for the study of the (re) formulation of culture, allowing to problematize as this sector fits and seeks post modernity, with the view to establishing whether the artistic process is changing, reformulating ways of creation, consumption and symbolic representation, adapting it to a cultural landscape restructuring. The research problem is founded on the finding of a lack of disclosure circuit and promotion of Plastic Arts in Cape Verde, which has created disparities of access to the conditions of production and dissemination among creators. The research took the form of ethnographic research, using the life story method, which helped to address the need to identify necessary changes in terms of restructure of the cultural landscape, regarding the local impact of four artists' work and knowledge of their heritage. The data was gathered from the interviews and observations, photography and video, which were analysed individually and comparatively and has helped to gain a more accurate insight into the artists’ views. The research tools helped to watch four artists that live in the city of Mindelo, let them talk and listen to them, to better understand their creativity and artistic production mechanisms, in relation with their culture and demands of the market. The findings of this research allowed to verify how Plastic Arts are controlled by establishment values. It was clear that this area is not yet fully supported by an official speech that legitimizes it as artistic creation. The selected themes covered by the four artists, illustrated with reproductions included in this study, talk about their artistic and aesthetic experience and the importance the artists attach to the traditional rituals (eg. Carnival). The conclusions confirm that the Plastic Arts were not yet recognized and they are largely understood as hiddenstream activities. The study also concludes that art education is fundamental as it can promote reflection on dominant aesthetic and cultural hierarchies and borders, which derive from cultural and academic stereotypes.
