Description
This study was developed as part of an educational intervention carried out in a 6th grade class, in History and Geography of Portugal, involving children aged 11 to 12 years. Women’s and children’s rights and duties have been, for the last century, one of the most developed subjects in politics, with great social and economic consequences. Despite of the visible changes that have emerged over the years, it is undeniable that there is still a long way to go in terms of equal rights for women and men and child protection. In schools, more specifically in History and Geography of Portugal, this is a subject that is taught in a superficial level, never in an autonomous way, but rather associated with another "bigger" subject-matter. Thus, the objective of this work is to deepen this question, trying to understand what is the impression of the students on the subject nowadays and in the time of their ancestors. Hereupon, it is intended to sensitize students to the importance of women’s and children’s rights (and duties) subject, the evolution suffered from the time of their grand grandmothers to the present day, and the fact that legislative changes in this field are not always followed by a change of mentalities, which sometimes makes progress not visible everywhere or at the same time.
