As universidades foram sempre um espelho e um motor das relações sociais e da sua época histórica. Partindo desse pressuposto, esta dissertação analisa as transformações do campo universitário português entre 1988 e 2015, com base nos discursos de dezoito reitores e dirigentes estudantis com responsabilidades nesse período, procurando cumprir quatro objetivos centrais. O primeiro é o de analisar as transformações das universidades à luz das mudanças sociais, económicas e políticas deste período, particularmente no contexto das mutações do capitalismo depois Consenso de Washington, das mudanças no Estado com a introdução do New Public Management, mas também à luz do processo de democratização e neoliberalização que marca a história da sociedade portuguesa desde 1974. Partindo desse enquadramento, o segundo objetivo é o de sinalizar e descrever aquelas que, segundo os agentes, constituem as dez principais transformações que se viveram nas instituições universitárias nos últimos vinte e sete anos. Mas estando essas transformações longe de serem consensuais, e sendo mesmo objeto de disputa nas universidades, o terceiro objetivo é o de examinar os onze principais dissensos que se identificam entre os agentes em torno das transformações do campo universitário. Finalmente, partindo destas transformações e dos dissensos que elas suscitaram, o quarto objetivo é o de procurar discutir se podemos falar da universidade enquanto campo, isto é, enquanto subconjunto relacional do espaço social, estruturado através de posições e disposições onde os agentes lutam pela posse de um capital específico e que tem uma autonomia relativa na relação com o poder político e económico.
Universities have always been both a reflection and a motor of the social relations and of its historic epoch. Taking this assumption, this dissertation analyses the transformations in the sphere of the Portuguese universities between 1988 and 2015, laying its foundations on the discourses of 18 deans and leading students with responsibilities in that time period, with the objective of accomplishing 4 central objectives. The first is to analyze the transformations of the universities in light of the social, economic and political transformations of this period, particularly in the context of the mutations of capitalism after the Washington Consensus, the changes in the State with the introduction of the New Public Management, but also in light of the process of both the democratization and neoliberalization that shapes Portuguese society since 1974. From this framework, the second objective is to flag and describe those that, according to social agents, constitute the 10 main transformations that the university institutions suffered over the last 27 years. But as these transformations are far from being consensual and being the same object of dispute in the universities, the third objective is to examine the 11 main points of contention over the transformations in the universities identified by the agents. Lastly, departing from these transformations and points of contention, the forth objective is to discuss if we can talk about the University as a field, this is, as a relations subset of social space, structures through the positions and dispositions where the agents struggle for the possession of a specific type of capital and that has a relative autonomy in relation to the political and economic power.
