O culto ao Divino Espírito Santo na ilha do Pico remonta à época do povoamento, pelo que as diferentes gerações que deram continuidade a estas festas continuam a celebrar as mesmas embora com alterações resultantes da dinâmica social. Deste modo, o presente estudo pretende analisar diversas formas de celebração das festas que se foram alterando e adaptando ao longo do tempo às caraterísticas da sociedade e do espaço ritual. A alteração mais significativa que se verificou na celebração das festas do Espírito Santo na ilha do Pico, aconteceu após a construção das Capelinhas (final do século XIX) e posteriormente dos salões, os quais vieram substituir a casa do mordomo. No trabalho de campo realizado entre 20 de Maio e 3 de Junho de 2015 foram observados, fotografados e posteriormente mapeados em base cartográfica todos os cinquenta e três circuitos processionais realizados nos núcleos urbanos de cada freguesia ou localidade dos três concelhos da ilha do Pico. Como resultado deste mapeamento foi possivel conhecer todos os tipos de dávidas oferecidas nas diferentes festas da ilha, assim como as mudanças dos rituais festivos, quer em termos de circuitos das procissões com o quase abandono da casa do mordomo, quer da alteração organizativa das procissões com a introdução das rainhas e o consequente aumento de quadros ou ainda da forma como se realiza o almoço partilhado nos salões.
The cult of the Holy Spirit on Pico Island dates back to the time of settlement, whereby the various generations carried on with these festivities, celebrating today with changes resulting from the social dinamic. In this way, this study aims to examine various ways of celebrating the ceremonies, which have changed and adapted over time to the characteristics of society and the physical space. The most significant change produced on the celebrations of the Holy Spirit on Pico Island happened after the construction of shrines (late nineteenth century) and later of the dining halls, which have come to replaced the role of the hosts's house. On the fieldwork conducted between May 20th and June 3rd, 2015, all fiftythree processional courses performed and the urban centers of each parish or locality of the three municipalities of the island of Pico were photographed, observed and, subsequently mapped into a cartographic database. As a result of this mapping it was possible to observe various oblations offered in the different festivities throughout the island, as well as the changes in the ceremonial rituals, in terms of the processions courses and the virtual abandonment of the host’s house, as in terms of the changes in the organization of the processions with the introduction of the queens, and consequently the increase of the number of stages or yet the way lunch is shared in the dining halls.
