A insularidade da Região Autónoma dos Açores acarreta algumas consequências do ponto de vista logístico, que acabam por afetar inúmeras áreas. Situada no meio do Oceano Atlântico, a cerca de 1.500 km de Portugal Continental, é uma região onde o acesso a matérias-primas e produtos acabados é um pouco difícil. Além do fato de o transporte aéreo ser extremamente caro, os baixos níveis de capacidade e carga transportada não tornam sustentável a importação de grandes quantidades de materiais, reservando-se, por isso, este modo de transporte a produtos de elevado valor. Esta dificuldade de importação aliada à pequena dimensão das ilhas, afeta a sua capacidade produtiva, o volume de vendas e consequente procura. Além disso, há ainda a problemática da exportação do produto açoriano, uma vez que não há capacidade produtiva suficiente para assegurar um fluxo de mercadorias capaz de satisfazer mercados externos, estando portanto este projeto focado num nicho de mercado muito peculiar – cozinha de topo e lojas especializadas em Lisboa e Porto. Ao deparar-se com este problema, o autor aceitou o desafio de contorná-lo de uma forma sustentável, procurando conquistar mais espaço para a marca Açores no mercado nacional. Como será explicado mais detalhadamente, o autor decidiu trabalhar um conjunto de produtos exclusivamente açorianos, de forma a acrescentar-lhes valor suficiente, através do próprio mercado em que será inserido e da logística, para que o transporte aéreo para Portugal Continental se torne economicamente viável.
The insular nature of the Autonomous Region of the Azores entails certain consequences from a logistics’ viewpoint, which ultimately affect many other areas. Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about 1500 km from mainland Portugal, it is a region where access to raw materials and finished products is somewhat difficult. The high cost of air transport and the low levels of capacity and cargo transported mean that the import of large quantities of materials is unsustainable, and should be reserved only to high-value products. This difficulty in importation combined with the small size of the islands affects its production capacity, the sales volume and the resulting demand. Moreover, the exportation of Azorean products is troublesome, as there is not enough production capacity to ensure a large flow of goods capable of satisfying external markets, and so this project is focused on a very specific market niche - top chefs and specialized shops in Lisbon and Oporto. When faced with this problem, the author accepted the challenge to bypass it in a sustainable manner, seeking to win more space for the "Azores" brand in the Portuguese national market. As it will be later explained in more detail, the author decided to work on a set of exclusively Azorean products in order to add them enough value through both the market where they will be inserted and the logistics, so that the air transportation to mainland Portugal is economically viable.
