Este estudo explora a análise das expectativas que podem influenciar os estudantes de Medicina na importante decisão da escolha da especialidade, registando as diferenças ao nível do momento inicial e final da graduação (dois ciclos de estudo), bem como ao nível do género face a especialidades específicas e respectivas expectativas futuras das mesmas. Para proceder à recolha de dados foi aplicado um questionário que resultou na composição de uma amostra de 285 estudantes inscritos em seis instituições do ensino superior público de Medicina. Os resultados da presente investigação mostram que, embora o género masculino continue a prevalecer na preferência pela escolha de especialidades cirúrgicas como carreira, o género feminino tende cada vez mais a interessar-se pela Cirurgia, ainda que continue a eleger as especialidades de Pediatria e Ginecologia/Obstetrícia e a revelar uma maior orientação biossocial em contraste com o género masculino durante o percurso académico. O estudo conclui também que a escolha da especialidade generalista de Medicina Geral e Familiar está associada a expectativas sociais, mais concretamente ao nível de orientação biossocial em detrimento das especialidades cirúrgicas, em que a componente social não é tão valorizada. Quanto aos resultados da investigação face aos diferentes momentos da graduação analisados, os estudantes de Medicina pertencentes ao segundo ciclo de estudos mostraram valorizar mais as expectativas instrumentais como factor preponderante e motivador para a decisão sobre a escolha da especialidade em relação aos colegas do primeiro ciclo de estudos.
This study explores the analysis of the expectations that may influence medical students in the important decision of choosing a specialty, noting the differences at the beginning and at the end of the course (two cycles of studies), as well as the differences of gender in specific specialties and their expectations for the future. To collect the data a questionnaire was used that with a sample of 285 medical students from six institutions of public higher education. The results of this investigation show that although male continue to prevail in their preference for surgical specialties for a career, females show an increasing interest in surgery. Despite this increasing interest females still continue to select the specialties of Pediatrics and Gynecology Obstetrics and reveal a larger biosocial orientation in contrast to the male during the academic path. The study also concludes that the choice of specialty of general practice is associated with social expectations, in particular the level of biosocial orientation as opposed to surgical specialties, where the social component is not as valued. As for the results of research of the different moments of graduation analyzed, medical students in the second cycle showed that instrumental expectations are a greater key factor and motivator for the decision on the choice of specialty, in relation to the students in the first cycle of studies.
