A problemática das representações mediáticas das minorias não foi descoberta agora e muitos são já os estudos nacionais e internacionais a esse respeito. Contudo, tendo em conta que as minorias em questão (a cigana e a de origem africana) são minorias desde há muito enraizadas na cultura portuguesa, nomeadamente a cigana que se fixou em Portugal há quinhentos anos, vale a pena repensar a questão da sua representação na impressa. Depois de tantos anos de convivência com a maioria dominante, que imagem das minorias é construída e propagada pelos media? Estas comunidades são devidamente representadas? Essa representação funciona como coadjuvante dos mecanismos de integração ou, pelo contrário, dificulta-os ainda mais? Estas e outras questões são discutidas neste trabalho, partindo de um caso concreto, o da hiper-mediatização do dito “Tiroteio da Quinta da Fonte”, para um panorama mais geral. Para isso é feito um enquadramento teórico com base nas questões de fundo que envolvem a imigração, as minorias, o mundo dos media e a relação estabelecida entre eles. Este enquadramento vai depois sustentar as análises (quantitativa e qualitativa) de 32 exemplares de cinco jornais diários lisboetas sobejamente conhecidos, as quais permitem de forma mais concreta observar aspectos específicos da construção mediática das minorias. Tendo em conta o poder dos media na construção, divulgação e propagação de ideologias, este trabalho pretende mostrar-se um instrumento útil no estudo e na análise dos mesmos no que diz respeito às minorias etnicamente diferenciadas.
The problematic of the minorities media representation wasn’t discovered nowadays and already many are the national and international studies on this matter. In spite of this, bearing in mind that the minorities concerned in this study (the gypsy’s and the african portuguese ones) have been established in the Portuguese culture for so long, namely the gypsies that settled in Portugal five hundred years ago, it is worthwhile to rethink the issue of its representation by the press. After so many years of sociability with the dominant majority, which image is made of minorities and how is it diffused by the media? Are these communities properly represented? Is this representation acting as a co-operating system of the integration devices or, on the contrary, is it making them even more difficult? This and other subjects are discussed in this work, drawing on a specific case, that of the “hiper-mediatization” of the alleged “Tiroteio da Quinta da Fonte” (Quinta da Fonte’s shooting), and aiming at a more general view. To achieve this, a theoretical framework was made based on the underlying questions that include immigration, minorities, the media world and the relation between them. This framework supports the analysis (quantitative and qualitative) of 32 examples of five Lisbon daily well known newspapers, the ones permitting a more concrete way to observe specific aspects of the media construction of minorities. Taking into account the media power in the construction, advertising and diffusion of ideologies, this work aspires to become a useful tool in the media studies and analysis concerning the ethnically differentiated minorities.
